Anyone else getting that foreboding feeling of 1960's riots happening again (though possibly not until AFTER we get through the rest of our return to the 1950's cloistered and reserved views we're gravitating towards on just about everything lately)?? I'd be all in favor of the current version of the christian June Cleaver leaving the kitchen, having sex and burning her bra if it didn't mean we were that much closer to assasinations and riot police again...
OK, let me start again....
Love your country; fear your govenment. First off, I love my country. I wouldn't say I fear my government (only because I haven't done anything wrong... today), but I am not so naive that I trust them in any way concerning their 'word'. Now that my phone lines are tapped and my email is copied to the pentagon, I'll continue...
In America I can either go out and hang american flags in support of our troops or I can rally peacefully down the streets of my hometown. Or I can choose to ignore everything and read a book... Unfortunately I am more apt to be incited to one or the other of the formers if I do ANYTHING BUT read a book. If I read the paper or turn on the TV, all I'll get is the current sensationalized headline of anger, fear or both that is meant to sell papers and boost ratings. And those ratings-winners seem to be be doing nothing but moving the common American to either one side or another of things they don't have any real control over.
And through it all the media gets more and more powerful while burying the true story - once its revealed 4 weeks later - on the back page, becuase the truth doesn't sell papers. Only the current buzz does, even if its only part of the truth.
Consequently, what do I really know? How am I suppossed to judge whether its really better to be constantly blowing up Columbine into such a big deal when all it seems to do is cause another batch of shootings at the next school when THEY hear about it? Doesn't matter - they'll make five more films about it anyway...
How am I suppossed to know how to feel about the war or my coutry's involvement? Why the hell would any of us WANT to see all 1400 pictures of our troops own mis-treatment of Iraqi POW.s? Well, its probably going to be June's NBC 'Movie of the week', so I can't stop it now...
What do I feel next now that I know that the US civilians captured in April were taped reading their captor's statements of OUR brutality right before they cut this poor, CIVILIAN man's head off? Why the hell am I subjected to all of this, now, when the story has only just broken and no one knows all the facts? I'll tell you how it makes me feel - pissed. If I wasn't so angered by what are suppossed to be 'better, more civilized' american troops in their handling of the Iraqi POW.s (which was still WAAAY better than how the enemy ever treated their prisoners) and disgusted by their initial hiding of the matter, I'd be telling them to go bomb the fuck out of those cavemen... In either case, all I can be is pissed, because that's how the media wants me to feel.
Still... Why does NPR ask the same stupid question of an Iraqi spokeman every other newsman asks; "How does the arab world feel about the mistreatment of the POW.s?" ...How the fuck do you THINK they feel about it?! You think they're gonna be OK with it just because they do ten times worse to us (and each other) every chance they get? Hell no! But does the whole world, much less the arab nation, need to another reason to hate us by breaking each new image as it comes as another front page headline just to keep us turning pages written by writers who only know half the story but report it as facts!?
Heeeelllllll no...
Why is the rest of the world pissed off at us for doing what we have the ability to do to stabalize a region that affects the whole world yet its children play with rocket grenades the way my neighbors play with firecrackers? Why? Becuase we're all being beaten over the head with this crap. We're inundated with it as if we have any business judging any of it until the chips have fallen - as if we could do anything about it before then EXCEPT rally in form or another.
Hell, even I don't know what I'm trying to say anymore - but I bet the media could TELL you what I'm trying to say and how I'm trying to say it.
I always advocate educating yourself - knowing what and why things are happening - but that has become admittedly difficult in a time when even the most popular journalistic avenues are caught battling for the sensation of the day instead of showing us the broader picture. I say, search for the truth, but don't expect to find it all, for you'll never know the whole truth... Don't try; the bulk of it is today's headlines and tomorrows bi-lines, so just get the basics and keep yourself up to date on what matters. In the meantime, let the government do its job - that's why its there. And Let the government watchdogs do THEIR job - making certain the govenment stays in line. Don't expect either job to get done over-night (approval ratings that once skyrocketed in favor of the war now drop because war is hell and it takes too much time and kills people - no shit, that's why its WAR... same as its always been, but that's HOW IT IS - its hell).
In the meantime - read a book - a good one. Prefurably fiction...

Oh yes, the media...let me just say that I'm learning a lot more about the Americans in this war while I'm in another country, than I ever did in Amercia. And may I suggest reading the Otori trilogy by Lian Hearn. It's very distracting.TEXT

Make sure you don't get TOO anti-american over there, kiddo... remember, you're in college, and all college students do is blow political and military shit out of proportion... Granted, that's what they're THERE for, but still, take everything, on both sides of every story, with a grain of salt.

Hey, I support America! I just can't find much defense for it with Bush being re-elected. At least Scott Peterson was found guilty. My faith in the American justice system is renewed.

Actually it's the news itself that "blows political and military shit out of proportion" but only when it's about the UK.

It does the same IN and of America as well... I don't think we can post Pictures on this MSG board (and how would I know, I'm only the MOD), but I did get an interesting email from a friend recently that showed "What they don't want us to know!; the true state of affairs in Iraq." And the pics were, surprisingly, American troops with smiling Iraqi children, an Iraqi woman leaning out of her car with a hand-made sign that said "Thank you Mr. Bush (Not that I'm a fan of him - and I did vote against him - but he's the Pres. and there's the example)," and other images that show how WELL things were going in some areas as appossed to all the negativeity that sells papers and advertising space on news shows... both here AND abroad... Just an example...
